How can i get government grants for setting up a small business. I am unemployed.?
I am 31 years old man from Chicago and I want to get US goverment grant for setting up a small business in Illinois. Are there government grants available for unemployed persons for setting up a small business in Illinois?
George:
Contrary to popular "wisdom", the federal government does not offer "grants" to help anyone set up a business.
The government’s Small Business Administration gets that question all the time, but as their website explains:
"Please Note that the U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, though it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. While the SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments."
I am not aware of any specific grant programs offered by the state of Illinois, but the state does offer Small Business Development Centers through the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
These centers provide:
# One-on-one business counseling and management assistance.
# Assistance with the development of business plans.
# Help accessing marketing information and the development of business plans.
# Business Financing Programs.
# Assistance with financial analysis and planning.
# Access to business education and training opportunities

In order to get a business grant, you must demonstrate the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to prove that you can start up and run a successful business. These grants are federal, not state and are not necessarily directed at "unemployed persons."
You also must be able to present a solid business plan that demonstrates the necessity for the business and offers a paradigm that would indicate success.
Call the Small Business Administration to find out what is required.
